XMUM EEE Students Win Gold Medal at InIIC, Series 1/2023
A group of three XMUM undergraduates - Tan Wei You, Yeo Wen Fang and Raymond Khor Er Chie - won the Gold Medal in Science, Engineering and Technology category at the International Invention and Innovative Competition (InIIC) Series 1/2023, among 52 groups of participants.
All three winners are final-year students from Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme, Xiamen University Malaysia. Their award-winning project, “Smart Water Irrigation System with Real Time Data Collection and Wireless Communication”, was conducted under the supervision of Ts. Dr. Kang Chia Chao.

Aiming to perform irrigation without water wastage and provide a better growing environment for plants, the team designed a smart water irrigation system which can perform irrigation manually and automatically based on the settings on Thinger.io platform.

In automatic mode, the system makes irrigation decisions based on the information of raining and soil moisture provided by raindrop sensor and soil moisture sensor respectively. The system is also equipped with distributed water tank system to mitigate the long-term drought impact on plants. Its application area is Wi-Fi covered public garden and it allows real-time display of environmental information on smartphone through Wi-Fi.
